Tour de France - catch up

OK, I know intellectually that it's over now, but I can't quite let it go....besides, it's traditional to discuss and dissect the Tour for months, isn't it?  So here are a few odd moments that I enjoyed, and wanted to share with you.

Firstly, did anyone else catch this little moment, in a back street in Paris? Eurosport were carrying out a serious post-Tour interview, and just look: what's that going on in the background?

Answer, the Leopard-Trek mechanic - the one who we saw giving Fabian a new bike after the "Leopards Hit The Deck"  incident - gets thoroughly kissed!

I think it's Roger, but I'm not sure - the one with the strange old-fashioned Mohican hair-do.

Yes, let's assume it's his girlfriend, and not One L Jil, or Martine in a dark wig and glasses..... the cameraman kept moving round to get Bob in the middle of the shot, and to obscure the snogging, but they kept moving! D/aaaw, kinda sweet.

Right, next funny moment: we had some footage on Eurosport, of "some of the top riders" arriving at Grenoble airport on the morning of the TT. This included Fabian, Jean Vois, Conti, Frank and Andy, Cav: blimey, good thing nothing happened to that plane, wasn't it? Our sport could have been wiped out in one fell swoop...does not bear thinking about.

Here's Andy entering the airport: oh look, some fans have gathered to ask for autographs.

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you, there must be all of seven, maybe eight fans waiting there.

So, ladies, a helpful hint: when trying to Stalk-a-Schleck, consider going to the little airports early in the morning, as there won't be much competition.

Of course, they will be tired and a bit cross, but they'll still sign autographs for you!

Here we are on the podium - ah, that podium *sighs*.

Andy is fiddling with his cap, as he's forgotten what to do with his arms.

Frankie has it right: put them behind your back in a manly manner. Keep the weight equally distributed on both legs, so you don't look like a nancy. Head up, gentle smile - don't grin like a maniac, but look happy, there are approximately 37,482 cameras on you.

The bird with the microphone is about to start warbling some strange song which they are claiming is the Australian national anthem (what? You mean it's NOT waltzing matilda? There goes another illusion, shattered...) and what is Cadel doing? He puts his right hand up the back of his jersey, and pulls out the Aussie flag! Great conjuring trick, Cadel!

Then, final TV moment for today, Cristin was asking about the clip of Frankie being a bit emotional after the TT.

I tried to take a video of it, but the TV banding made it unwatchable. (You know, the black bands that your eyes can't see, but which the camera can. So much for "the camera never lies"..)

It was very short, and of poor quality, and was a bit intrusive, but basically it was Fabian giving Frankie big hugs, and ruffling up his hair.
Poor Frankie didn't really want to be filmed at this time, and you can't blame him.

Fabian moves off, leaving others to pat Frankie consolingly on the shoulder, as he gets himself under control.

And this is the man who has just made the highest win of his career - all upset because his brother didn't quite win it. I don't want to hear any more criticism of the brotherly bond, I think it's lovely.

Under the general heading of "Stupid Things Commentators Say" has to come this one, again from Eurosport: after the usual comments that Andy has now come second three times (as though that were a bad thing!) one guest was asked "Do you think Andy has had his day? Will he try again?"

I didn't hear the answer, I was howling at the tv so loudly. Andy is only 26, guys! Plenty of time, yet, plenty of time.

He said himself that he was getting stronger each year, in fact he made a lovely subtle point about his second places. He said that in 2009, he won second place. In 2010, he "lost" first place, because he was as strong as Conti, but he didn't quite manage to beat him. This year, he says he again "won" second place, because Cadel was just that much stronger than him.

For someone who's been a bit cossetted and protected, that's a very mature way of looking at things, I think.

And finally for tonight, (how often do I say that, before rambling on for another several paragraphs? Well, I get distracted.. or I remember something else I wanted to share.. or when looking for new pictures doing some in-depth research on one point, another point raises itself...) let's have a big super cheer for Fabian.

Why?

Well, for a start, why not?

But in particular, for giving so much in support of the team that he only ("only!") came 7th in the TT.

I mean, can you imagine how galling that must be, to be the World Champion at TT, and to only come 7th?

To have those 6 other guys, for the rest of their cycling careers, saying "Hey, I beat Cancellara!"

What a fantastic sacrifice.

I know that all the others gave huge amounts as well, but for people like Jensi and Stuey, well, we know that they are Super-Domestiques, that's what we expect of them.

But Fabu has a reputation: he is the best Time Trialist in the world!  And he was able to put all that aside to do his part when it was needed. Fantastic!

Well done, Fabian!

By the way, Fabu, why are you apparently handcuffed to that chair?

  1. I love the snogging! And I can just see the camera-man trying to get them out of the picture.
Speaking of snogging, an old friend of Schleckland has been popping up in the news these past couple of days because of some gold medal - Lotte "Andy er sød" Friis. I have to laugh every time I hear her name!

Now that you mention the awkward standing on the podium, Mum said, while we were watching the ceremony, that Andy was looking grumpy with his arms crossed over his chest - which is really unfair!

Has everyone seen the heartbreaking video of Andy and Frankie right after Andy finishes his TT? All those journalists and photographers without a shred of decency should just stay OUT of their way!

Ah, Fabu... He's just wonderful, isn't he?

  2. I love this characteristically Coug-ish recap! I do so agree with your take on Fabs - he doesn't get enough credit for his amazing attitude towards teamwork. He's not only an incredible world champion but a remarkable teammate. Makes me like the guy that much more.

BUT, one bone to pick. Your claim that Andy is "fiddling" with his hat is actually my favorite Andy moment on the podium - he's the only one of the three who realizes they should take off their caps during a national anthem. He reaches for his hat, looks to Frank as if to say, "dude, who raised you?" and then leads/shames Frank and Cadel into doing the same. Good lad, that Andy.

  3. Lol, thanks for remembering and for the effort Coug ;-)
As you may have noticed I too happen to have a thing for seeing grown men weep, so you're definitely not alone on that one.

And big LOL at the first photo. I can also imagine the camera man trying to move them out.

I, for one, had never had anything to say against the brotherly bond. I can only imagine how wonderful is it to have support like that in your life.
BTW, I think one must be a really strong person to pull yourself together in time to comfort your little brother. Knowing myself, I'd probably have joined him. (May I shamefully admit that for a little moment I actually did, in the privacy of my living room lol)

Also lol at from where Cadel pulled the flag. I've spent half the ceremony wondering about it, because I know he wasn't holding it in his hands and I apparently missed that moment.

I actually don't think Andy is half as immature as he comes off. To me it looks like more of the everyone-babies-me-and-does-stuff-for-me-so-why-bother-protesting syndrome, and sometimes it shows in his interviews because you'd guess it's already became a bad habit. However his other statements, such as that one you stated and the graceful handling of defeat prove he's actually more mature than that.
Or maybe I'm just bored with my life and overanalyzing, lol.

    @Susanne
I know what video you're talking about. Agreed completely, moments like those should NOT be filmed. Not that I have anything against weeping men porn, but after, like, the second or third time I'd seen it (ON TV) it began to bug me. Why rejoice in someone's pain? It's plain rude and wrong, period.
But the vid isn't the worst part. That was, after all, a public place. As in, they knew there were cameras shooting around. But on pressphoto.lu there are a couple of photos from the bus, I suppose after the TT, with Frankie holding a topless Andy and without many other people around them (e.g. so obviously supposed to be a private moment) You can't see Andy's face, but I don't think he was exactly laughing his ass off. Now that's wrong.

    @knittinggene
Lol at "Dude, who raised you" comment! Btw, it was my favorite moment too, apart from Leea looking like she may as well start crying when Cadel got into her face.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yes, Fabu is just wonderful, I never used to think he was particularly good-looking (*flinches from deluge of instructions to go and get eyes tested*) but the more interviews I see, the more I realise that he just oozes charisma, and is just such a great guy. Yay, Fab! And I do think he deserves some special recognition for what he did in this Tour.

Lotte Friis!!!! Aaaack! Ah, fond memories of Schleckland.... so glad to hear (*sarcastically*) that "Our Swim Princess" has recovered from all those hot-tongue-kisses. She was so not the right girl for him!

PeeDee, aha, I didn't mean that moment (which was lovely, for many reasons) I meant earlier, before Cadel did his magic trick with the flag. Andy clearly didn't know what to do with his arms - as Susanne's Mum said, the arms crossed bit does look grumpy, and he quickly realised it was the wrong pose - so he was fiddling with his cap in order to avoid doing it.

I do think that crossed arms - the classic "keep out" body language pose - does not sit well with wearing skin-tight "get it here" lycra clothing..... always makes me laugh. The butch "arms behind back" looks so much better. And you can read the sponsor logos, too.

That video of Andy and Frankie just after the TT - well, those journos should all be taken outside and shot. Did you hear the L-T guy shouting at them to stop?

Cristin, you make a good point about it being easier to accept the babying when you are the youngest one. I do get the feeling that Andy, being basically a nice guy, would not want to speak out against it. ("Aww Muuuuum, don't ruffle my hair in public!") I still think that the whole Beergate thing was a sign of him growing up - and his acceptance of the punishment was extremely mature.

And going back to Cadel's flag - I was watching it for about the third time when I suddenly realised that I hadn't seen anyone hand him that flag. So I watched it again, watching Cadel exclusively (bit of a strain, but I managed it) to see how he did it. Glad to share it with you all!

  5. I loved Leea being scared of Cadel! My brother and I agreed that Fränk has probably been showing her pictures of him while telling her that he was the evil man stealing Uncle Andy's yellow jersey.

  6. Thanks Barbara for the affair info. My friend who told me what she heard, dislikes the Schlecks so loves to tell me anything that might make OGL appear anything but holy and righteous. Sounds like Curacao is a very hot and happening place!

  8. Wups, sorry Bolderado, I read that a couple of days ago and forgot to mention it. Yes, the UCI/WADA lawyers waited until the last day before asking for clarification on some of the papers, so they've had to put the hearing back. Grrr!

CINDY!!!! (*eyes and mouth fully wide open*) How you can say such a thing! I am shocked, really shocked. No, I am. Shocked. Both of them? Icecream? (*ok, slightly intrigued*) No! Shocked! Shocked!

Seriously, no, that's not me, but I'll take it as a compliment that you thought of me.... I think?

Susanne, that's a lovely idea! I laughed out loud when it happened, thinking "There's a bloke who is not familiar with small children!" Good think Leea didn't cry, that would have been embarassing for everyone!

Thank you! That blog is simply hilarious.

  11. I'm confused with timing of events after the TT. What I saw was Frank coming in - media circus - one guy hollering as he was being crushed ino a car - then they took Franks's bike (looking for a motor). When Andy arrived - Frank still had his helmet on as he was hugging Andy and they were saying "next year, we do it"....
So it seems it must have been after that when Frankie broke down and Fabu mussed his hair...??

I also was waiting for Leea to cry on the podium and evisioned the same thing of "this is the man that made Daddy so sad"...I love that Frankie brought her up there. I remember seeing Conti with his daughter at the Giro and how disconnected they seemed, I thought it was sad, and it confirmed again for me that I really don't like Conti, seemed like his daughter ...... OK that's just mean - so I won't say it.
The BDIPC site was pretty funny.

  16. And apparently when Conti was on the podium, they played the wrong version of the Spanish national anthem - the one with the words "Long live Spain! Raise your arms, sons of the Spanish people, who are rising again." Oops.

Better than his 2009 Tour victory, when they played him the Danish national anthem....

    (*laughs unsympathetically*)

BE, wow, let's all go to Colerado! You could volunteer to be a marshall, or the one who holds their bottoms before the TT, or.. (*thinks "Stop now, Coug, stop now.")

Oh, and Cindy, I have something else to say to you: (*mock stern face*)

    1) *Points at Naughty Corner*

    2) Do you really think I would have included Linus (not my type) and left out Jakob (also not my type, but pheew, he is a good-looking boy. Even with no hair. Did you notice, btw, in the party pics, that although it is only a quarter of an inch long, he's tried to get a parting into it? And while on the subject, I thought that Luscious LooLoo was looking spectacularly lovely, actually. Far nicer (and prettier) than in the video. OK, yes, that skirt was a bit short and failed to go with the rest of her outfit, but when I was that age, I wore skirts that short. Hell, I still have skirts that short! (although I don't wear them much these days) End of digression.)

    3) Just look at it - big pics, short paras. If I had done it, it would be about a hundred times longer. And would not include Pierre Rolland. With all the respect in the world to him, no. Non. Non!

    Coug

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, the national anthem from 2009. We have to watch that video EVERY year! It makes me cringe to see Bertie's awkward smile while he's trying to pretend nothing's wrong. This year it was, apparently, extra funny because now "he is almost Danish". Yeah, he's not...

That reminds me, in an interview with Danish TV2 I saw during the Tour he's asked whether he'd consider living in Denmark (ah, the standard question). He smiles awkwardly (yes, the same smile) and you can see him trying to come up with a diplomatic answer because of course he DOESN'T want to live in Denmark. And it's fine! (Actually, it's more than fine but whatever.) But he chooses to say: "You eat dinner too early in Denmark." Yep. That's why he won't live here. Right.

I'm stunned every time someone leaves Jakob out of lists like that! I mean, the boy is so pretty. Really pretty.

TV2 made a top 3 of the hottest cyclists (through time, even) and Jakob was number 1 - yeah, no, not biassed at all :P I have my doubts with that list, though, as they put Lance Armstrong on second place. Where did that come from?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @Susanne
Out of curiosity, when do you eat dinner in Denmark? lol

Lance Armstrong hot? Yeah, maybe if you really squint... Actually no, not even then. LOL

    @Coug
It could have been worse... They could have played the Cara al Sol. (That was the anthem during the Civil War and the Fascist regimen)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lance hot? Noooo, I don't think so. He's too old!

    Coug

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ahem........I don't think Lance is too old....I think he's very good looking - (I confess now: I have had an ability, historically, to be attracted to the most tweaked/wierdest/unusual guy in the room.)Since I'm turning 60 in August - NO! Lance is not too old~.

I agree Coug - Rolland? What?? Where was Jakob? I even went back thinking I just surely must have missed him. Interesting though to see what kind of guy Bangable is attracted to! A few of those guys would not have been on my list! Ah, the window into the mind/heart of the blogger!

This Pro Tour in CO is really getting exciting~~ Cadel is not doing the Vuelta so he can be here! Schlecks here! Fabu here (sigh)! Shack, Garmin, HTC....yeosah!
They are getting a really great turn out of the "Big Boyz" and it will be really interesting to see how the organizers pull it off! I sure hope they do a great job. I have nightmares at being in charge of an event like this! Some of the course is through (eh, not so great)residential areas. But up in the peaks - it's pretty stupendous. I can't imagine crowd control. I've often criticized the races - and now - my State is going to be "on the line" - I really hope they do this well. Due to Lance's involvement, I am confident that the riders will be well cared for and kept safe. Altitudes of just under 13,000 ft~. This will not be an easy week for these guys. It is sure an opportunity for the Schlecks and Cadel (and perhaps Conti!) to dance again....

I think the views and info you get on TV or feeds is so much better than entering into the maddness that is along the route....But that's just me- "been there, done that". The closest the actual race comes to me is about 30 miles south of me. It will be an absolute zoo. Already a crowded area - I can't imagine walking those 30 miles - and can't envision where people will park!

Then again - I'm older and have done a lifetime of crowds in the 60's, 70's and the music biz....

If anyone want's any info about coming out that I can provide - just let me know. Happy to help out however I can. elliesecondhalfataol.com

  21. I personally want to thank Craft for outfitting Fabian in the very visible Swiss Leopard Trek kit, which can be spotted from outer space, or in my case, from the Rivoli-Pyramides tunnel intersection, and then later the eastern corner of the Champs Élysées.

Jet-lagged, but still kind of buzzed about the whole Paris, Stalk-a-Schleck(s), Berthillon ice cream jaunt. Photographs of cyclist's backs, and a report forthcoming.

  24. Have been recovering from bad thoughts about some of the top 10 bangable dudes.

I agree- no Linus or Rolland! Jakob only with hair (on head). I am probably jealous of LouLou and her long legs (of which we are quite familiar) but actually do think she scrubs up pretty well (can you imagine how long it would take thoses two to get ready?)
Re Lance I actually think he is okay in a arrogant, aggressive marine type of way but wouldn't put him in my top 10 (well maybe my top 10 over 40yrs).

Cougs I thought of you when I found that site as it was similar to your writing/ wit (just more x rated). I'm sure you wouldn't think such obscene things about the pro cyclists who we all totally respect and are interested in their cycling only and not their fit bodies/ tight buttocks/ cute faces/ packages etc etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Don't go looking at Luxprivat!

It is the worst sort of journalism. On the day that Leea was born, Frankie was very upset to find out that their front page featured a naked couple bonking, with his and Martine's faces photo-shopped onto their bodies, with a huge syringe sticking out of the bloke's buttock.

On the day his daughter was born!

They are the ones that started the "Is Andy Schleck an Alchoholic?" story after Beergate...

It's a rubbish-magazine, and should only be used for lining the cat's litter tray. Or for picking up dog poo.

Please disregard anything that they have to say.

P'Andy and TinkerJil look very happy together, and it would appear from hints on the internet that they have been seeing each other for a while, but have kept it secret, and you can understand why.

I would hate to have to watch a parade of girls come and go, to see him all happy with a new one, then a fortnight later "Oh, she's not the one" or "it didn't work out". That would send all the wrong sort of signals. I think he has done exactly the right thing by waiting until he is sure before presenting her to the gimlet eyes of the fangirls and the press.

So they may well be talking about marriage, we all know that he wants "heaps of kids". But don't forget that his very influential brother dated Martine for 8 years before they got married. TinkerJil is clearly young, they don't need to rush things, and I think he's been brought up to be sensible. So on balance, I think a proposal is a bit unlikely in the very near future.

Now she has a rough ride for a while, until everyone gets used to the idea, so let's spare her some sympathy, shall we? If Luxprivat are on to her, she might be the target of some downright unpleasant stories from them. Don't be too quick to believe any that you hear!

(*grits teeth*) Go, Jil-bear! (*mutters "but if you break his heart...." *)

Oh, and Cindy, (Or "Sin-dy" as I shall now think of you!) I forgot to add:

    4) My adoration for OGL is a pure and spiritual thing, as you all should know by now, and does not descend into mere lust. So there.

BTW - sorry, another thing - I saw some fangirlies wearing "proper" Leopard kit in the audience, and didn't it look wrong? Replica kit has to be skin-tight, on a lean body, otherwise it just looks silly! Sorry, can't find a photo to illustrate it. Come on L-T, make up some tee-shirts with the black and the blue and some of the logos.... we don't all want to wear expensive performance jerseys, but we'd like to wear something that shows who we support..

  36. I think Lux Privat looks like a very classy mag.(Just joking)- but there does appear to be some very interesting stories about princes and transvestites, royal families hiding bucketloads of cash and an obligatory Schleck story every issue. I mean Papa Schleck killing a wild pig with a knife is so interesting is it not?

Actually I must say that Luxembourg must be a bit short on celebs to be so fascinated with 2 skinny dudes who cycle. I mean don't they have any trashy rock/pop stars or drug addicted soap stars or such. In Oz this week a couple of the mags have Cuddles on the front cover with features within about him and his lovely wife (and the dog). I think Cadel may have popped off and had a quick colour put through his locks as well(not so good but not as bad as PhilGil).

Whilst I am very much a fan of the beauty and pain of pro cycling as a sport, I'm afraid Cougs that 'Sin' is probably appropriate for me as I confess my interest and thoughts on OGL and Fabian is definately sinful. Very, very sinful! Wicked, dirty, bad very bad thoughts. Probably should go and take a cold shower right now.

I just added a postscript about a conversation I had with one of the statues in the Tuileries, and some advice about sending postcards.

It's been sweltering around the Greater Toronto Area too. On average about 27-32 degrees Celsius. I can actually feel my brain resisting the effort to think ...it usually only does that when I have to study!

Cindy, does Andy really inspire lubricious thoughts? It's funny, because I like to imagine him as a kind of chivalrous, knight-errant. *starts humming the "Marble Halls" aria from Michael Balfe's The Bohemian Girl*

  38. Jani Brajkovic and Tommy Danielson doing some cycling in the "neighborhood"....so cool. I love living in Boulder!

  39. BE - how fun! Both my kids are looking at UC Boulder as a possibility for college - one in 2012 and one in 2013. That probably means a visit for me to your fair city to check out the school! (Unfortunately, though, not during the race - sad face.)

Figgy - Yup, those...French. Glad there was a secondary location, though, for you to sample the icy goods.

  40. Coug, Frank and Andy's closeness is one of the qualities I admire about them (I think I'm smitten with the entire Schleck lot, as a unit), and this picture quietly breaks my heart:

  41. So it is now in the open. It took them a long long time to find out.

    @Cindy LOL

  42. So, our dear One L Jil plays basketball, or is it that I'm too much of a clutz to google people properly?
I don't think I am, 'cause one of first results that comes up is a 24-years-old basketball player Jil Delvaux from Luxembourg, xD

  43. Coug, are you alright out there? BBC World news has been showing terrifying footage of the London riots in Tottenham, Lewisham, and Croydon, and now they seem to have spread to Birmingham as well. Be okay!

    Worried.

  44. Hey Figgy, don't worry, all is well in Schleckland. (No-one would dare to riot or loot without permission from me, and I'd make them fill in a form in triplicate first, ha ha)

Oddly enough, strange sense of deja vu, I lived in Tottenham many years ago, and there was rioting then, too!

It's a strange old world, in which we live...

Coug - and thanks for your concern (*big hug*)
