So sad, poor old Jurgen Van de Walle: what a crappy Tour he's had.
Firstly he crashed spectacularly hard while trying to warn other riders about a hazard.
Then he spends pretty much the rest of the day pulling the entire peloton, despite having bandages all over the place.
THEN I get his name wrong on this blog, due to my own laziness in not checking the team roster properly....
...and now, after struggling through the TTT, he's finally had to admit that he's not fit enough to finish the stage, and he's the Tour's first official withdrawal.
Aww, poor Jurgen. Most non-Schleck riders who are mentioned on this blog go on to win whole races, (JVS, we mean you!), but alas, not this time.
Maybe he'll have better luck later in the season, when his inside-thigh muscle has healed. I do hate the phrase "groin strain", don't you?
It looks as though Christophe Kern from Europcar (he won a stage in the Crit Dauphine recently) might be next to withdraw, he's having knee problems: but good news about Solar, he's no longer in a coma and is starting to make very slight improvements.
Great news for us today: Contador is now 1'30" down on Andy: Frankie came in 7th on the same time as Cadel Evans, who pipped Conti to the win by, apparently, "the width of one tyre and a deep section rim." Well done, Cuddles. This leaves Frankie in 3rd place in the GC, with Andy 9th and Jakob 10th.
Hey, remember our outrage about the TT bike checks? (*pat on back to BoulderEl for spotting it*)
Incidentally, (*sniggers heartily*) Johan Bruyneel of Radioshack and Bradley McGee of SaxoBank have been fined 200 Swiss francs (each!) for unprofessional conduct over the saddle-checking fiasco. (I put these links in, by the way, so that you can check that I am not making this stuff up.)
The UCI are saying that they told teams a month ago that they would be checking this item. Ah, how the story keeps on changing. An interesting point is made by Mr Bruyneel, that these same bikes have been scrutinised and accepted by the same officials in the Tour de Suisse and the Crit Dauphine. And yet the UCI saw fit to make a big fuss at the Tour, and now these two guys have been heavily fined for, presumably, looming over the officials in a threatening way.
Did I say "heavily fined"? 200 francs, wow, that's (*pause while I find a calculator - drat, can't find one, have to take my socks off, hold on a tick:*) $237, or £148 good old British pounds, or 222 Aussie dollars ("Hey Leelu!") wow, that's nearly two visits from my plumber to fix the boiler, then. Yes, dear readers, my boiler is dripping gently upon the floor and alas, I have no hot water.
Anyway, getting back to bikes, it looks as though the UCI are determined to stir up trouble - or possibly, to distract us away from drug problems. They've announced that they are going to start random bike checks, immediately. This means that they can grab a bike and take it away for testing, with no notice. If a bike goes missing on the way to the commissaire's tent, or if a team is found trying to substitute another bike, then the rider will be immediately disqualified from the Tour.
Seems harsh, huh?
But there could be a reason: and it's down to our good friend Contador, who might be in trouble again.
It seems that during the Giro, he did a lot of bike changing in the mountain stages, for no apparent reason. Not changing a wheel, but changing the entire bike, and not once but "several times".
There's a chap called Cyrille Guimard, described as a former DS, who is suggesting - well, no, insinuating - that Conti has been using "mechanical doping" or, in short, a bike with an engine.
Oh dear yes, we all remember the slanderous attacks on Fabian last year. This Guimard appears to be suggesting that the common link between Fabian's alleged engine-in-bike, and Conti's undoubted leaping-up-a-mountain-like-a-little-lambkin is Bjarne Riis, who is (he thinks) the purveyor of these electric bikes.
The UCI announced last year that they were going to x-ray bikes, but nothing came of it and, as far as anyone knows, they are no longer doing so. Which means that anyone accused of having an engine in their bike can't really prove that they hadn't....
...Poor Bjarne, things are not going well for him. Not least because SaxoBank only signed up for one more year of sponsorship because he got Contador on board the squad.
That means that Bjarne is once more hunting for a sponsor for 2012, and with the doping scandal etc hanging over Contador's head - well, he's not finding it easy.
And as well as that, Bjarne has to keep just a little bit of attention free for Baby Bjarne, Thomas Nybo, who has just been selected to ride in the Tour of Denmark.
Cute little thing, ain't he?
I wish I could say that we have found out more about ANDY SCHLECK GIRLFRIEND 2011 JIL and other annoying search terms, but all we know is that now he refers to her most casually: “I have a girlfriend, yes. I have a busy life and I’m away for long periods, but I would not change it. She has to live with this for the time of my career.”
A-ha-ha neighing! No, I don't know quite why I find this so funny. I mean, funny ha-ha, rofl funny. And sort of cute. I know things often get lost in the translation, but it seems so un-characteristically heartless of him, and at the same time he makes it sound as though she's already agreed to put it up with it until he gives up racing, like a long-term thing. (*sound of breaking hearts all over the continent*)
Or, perhaps we should say that this is the true Andy, utterly dedicated to his racing? Which, frankly, is what I would expect. I'm still a bit surprised that Jakob has the Lovely LouLou, she just kinda looks like a high maintenance girlfriend that would get all pouty when he has to go off and live in hotels with the boys for weeks at a time. (Apologies to the perfect stranger LouLou, we know nothing about you so we have to extrapolate and I may well be completely wrong.)
Really interesting points made Coug!
ReplyDeleteThere was a scene in the documentary where Bjarne is picking Andy up - CSC at that time, when he first joined in....I like Bjarne - but he looked like a pedophile......bothered me tremendously. I hope it was just "Wow, I'm taking this kid away from his family - I hope he will be OK"...He just looked kinda leering....
The more I learn about Andy the more I think he is so solid in who he is and what he wants and has the ability to hold himself so strongly, regarding his goals, so strongly...that I no longer think of him as a puppy - but as a pit pull - a good one. He's "strong" in so many areas - as he must be to accomplish what he's setting out to accomplish.
I will venture a prediction - I think this is Franks's last year racing. I sense that he is tired and ready for more family time and perhaps a leadership position in running LT instead of racing....thoughts?
I think the Woulter horror was so hard to so many people and is really re-adjusting their priorities.
BolderEl
Baby Bjarne.. oh my, I couldn't stop laughing. Love your blog.. you always point out things in such a funny and interesting way!
ReplyDeleteI found out Jil's last name, but after that I found out that it's quite impossible to find anything on her at Google. Someone, something tried their very best to keep her utterly low-profile. The only link I got is from Lux basketball, but there it stops. (Influential strings).
ReplyDeleteIt must be a difficult situation.
@BolderEl I don't think Fränk is already up for pensionada. He's still one of the best riders in the world and it would perhaps also mean that Andy would stop then. How would we survive?
Barbara,
ReplyDeleteI hope you are right.
I must share that at the Tour of California I noticed some real changes in OGL and my personal observation (as a mother) was that I thought he'd gotten into a serious relationship. Changes the energy and I could see it. Initially I was thinking it had to do with the shock of loss with Wouter, but that didn't really feel on target, though I thought it was a part of what I was noticing.... I was right as it turns out, and I appreciate the confirmations found here.
You know how on the LT Driven By Glory video, Fabian says he understands the danger, but he is not scared? Frank is a new Dad. Had a couple of surgeries this last year, lots of accidents (talks a lot about how important this year is and how much it hurts to do this day after day - again priorities can change when the cat starts looking at the number of lives that have been ticked off. Frankie has had a lot of miraculous "saves". I want to be wrong on this. And - Andy is all grown up now.
BE
I'm betting OGL's gal is Jil Mathes.

I think that if I were Andy's newly-presented girlfriend, I would have spent some time making myself low-profile, too!
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought it was a bit unfair to "out" her - but then I realised that in this media-driven age, girl/boyfriends have to accept that going out with a "star" of any degree does entail a certain amount of scrutiny from the press and from the fans.
Let's hope she's ok with it!
Yes, I thought that OGL was growing up in a hurry this year, way back in January at the Lux presentation, he was no longer the puppy. I think it's possible that he's suddenly realised the responsibility he's taken on, as, to be perfectly honest (and apologies to Frankie) it is Andy who is the figurehead of the new team. There are a lot of people depending on him for their salaries, if you see what I mean.
I, too, have been wondering if Frankie might be starting to think about retiring.
That's why I'm quite keen for Frankie to win the TdF this year, with Andy second - sorry, Andy!
In addition, I am expecting a second baby to be announced any time now, and although I know that Jensi has managed to have a HUGE family and still race, I somehow think that Frankie might want to be a bit more stay-at-home. I don't know why I get that impression: BoulderEl has some good points about the number of "saves" Frankie has had, and there is a saying about pitchers and wells...
Of course, we could all be wrong: the death of a colleague always makes people stand back and make assessments, but often after a while, things swing back into perspective and life goes on.
Whatever happens, this is a great time to be a cycling fan!
Coug
PS Thank you Marleen, d'aaaaw (*blushes*) sometimes I read what I'm writing and think "who on earth is going to be interested in this drivel!" especially when I get diverted into side issues...
ReplyDeleteTalking of which, have you ever clicked on the button at the top of the screen, the one that says "next blog"? You can step through a selection of blogs that have nothing to do with the one you started with... and you don't half find some rubbish!
I wasted about half an hour last night doing that, and came to the conclusion that blogs fall into a small number of categories:
1) Family.
1)a)family with sick child
2) Religious
2)a) Religious with sick child ("Pray for me")
3) Self-obsessed boring person
3) Hobby or insanely dedicated to one theme
4) Genuinely interesting person.
Now I'd put The Expatresse in Cat 4, as her blog is funny, interesting, varied, and actually useful to other ex-pats, to anyone thinking about moving to Lux (you know you want to...) and to anyone interested in what's going on in Lux. (That would be us). What do you mean, you've never looked at it? Get over there at once! http://thebeetgoeson.net/ not least for the famous Stalk-a-Schleck entry!
I'd like to think that this blog is edging into Cat 4, but I suspect it's more likely to be firmly entrenched in Cat 3!
Coug
Actually Saxo Bank has decided to continue their sponsorship for another year - with or without Bertie. I really don't understand them and if I was Bjarne I'd be pretty mad at them. First they announce that they're stopping their sponsorship last year which must be considered as one reason for so many riders to leave the team. Then they decide to continue anyway (AFTER half the team has left). This year they want to stop their sponsorship, sends Bjarne on a frantic search for a new sponsor (only made harder because of Bertie's doping case) until they decide to continue once again. Apparently they can't make up their minds.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about Andy's comment about his girlfriend too! It's like, "Deal with it" instead of something a little less... selfish? Maybe, "It's really hard for both of us, bla, bla, bla" instead? Well, he probably didn't mean it that bad at all :P
At this moment, Tom Boonen is making himself my new cycling hero. I hope he finishes the stage under the time limit.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I see the family resemblance in Thomas' jawline--I also don't think that Bjarne is ugly and/or has the face of a foot, but perhaps I'm alone on that.
Thank you to Susanne for translating what Bjarne had to say on the documentary. He does seem to have had a quasi-paternal relationship with the Schlecks, so perhaps this was the source of acrimony in their leaving his team, to form a new one.
Yes, that terse answer on the LT website, "She has to live with this for the time of my career” put a chill in my heart. It isn't the first time he's done so. On that RTL Dream Team Video featuring Jakob, when they mention that they're looking for a nice cleaning lady, Andy chimes in that she must "cook, and do everything."
Heh. Good luck with that, and having the heaps of kids. :P
This looks more like her:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513384266
If you google her, this twitter comes up, and I also think this pic looks like her:
http://a3.twimg.com/profile_images/345613401/Lolajili.jpg
I just checked Jakob's friends for someone named Jil, and there she was. Yeah, maybe a bit creepy but that's what happens when you have a profile :)
Scouring the internet for a picture of the girlfriend... that way madness lies. No thanks.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm in the minority of people that really wants to know NOTHING about the missuses--they're not in the peloton, and I don't think they're half so interesting to look at as their helpmeets :P *sound of a cat meowing approval in the distance*
-susan, not interested much in Jil, nor the improbable spelling of her name.
Eh, it took me all of two minutes on my lunch. No big deal. I think we're all initially curious and then the novelty will wear off.
ReplyDeleteTerse is a good word for that comment! As I said, I do appreciate that it might have lost something in the translation, but I would have expected something more like "I have a busy life and I’m away for long periods, but I would not change it. She is ok with this.”
ReplyDeleteOr, "She is ok with this: it's hard sometimes but she accepts that it is part of what I do."
(Poor Andy: having every nuance analysed!)
Allie, hi! The first one has been removed - aha, you were probably on the right track then! - and the second one: well, (*coughs nervously*) it does indeed look like her, and she's obviously having a lovely time with Lola.
Good luck with this one, Andy!
At least she doesn't model underwear - didn't someone say that Jakob's girlfriend was a dodgy lingerie model?
Coug
Allie, I do apologise to you if I seemed catty in that last comment--I've been a little out of control today. I'm reacting more to fans in general. When Fede writes that her blog received 500 hits on a girlfriend-related post, I have to wonder if we haven't all lost our minds.
ReplyDeleteOr to purloin a line from Star Wars, on hearing the news, it was as though, "millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced." Did I just compare Andy getting himself a steady girlfriend, to planetary annihilation? Yes, I believe I did.
Yes, what Bjarne had to say in the documentary changed my opinion about him for the better. As Coug says, it's nice to see a softer side.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right, Figgy. I've read Riis' biography and he talks about how he sometimes get too close with his riders. Mostly with Basso who he had to fire over all the doping and that really hurt him a lot because he became like a son to him.
He's known Andy since he was a kid, basically, and helped him grow so it's not hard to understand why the break was so emotional and messed up.
One part in his biography made me feel really sorry for him: it's about the Tour after-party last year. He writes that the whole team left the party early and later he finds out that they left to celebrate with Kim Andersen instead. No one apparently even bothered to say goodbye - except Andy, who came up and thanked him for everything. I can't blame him for being disappointed, really.
I am really starting to like Thomas. I have to say, I can't find Bjarne even mildly attractive no matter how hard I try :P Thomas was in the pre-Tour show here today (and the one afterwards) and he was all cute, smiley and sort of shy with dimples matching Jakob's :P
Hi again CG! I keep popping in to read your blog but have been super busy working lately so haven't been able to comment much. Does anyone else tend to open, on different tabs, all of the sites you read, forget you have then open, and then open them again? Or maybe it's just me trying to work (from home, which is tough!) and follow the TdF at the same time.
ReplyDeletefigbash, no worries. My husband and brother call me the "queen of the internet" because I'm able to quickly find someone if they are out there... I *know* it's creepy but it's a talent I have, LOL. I found my brother's college crush in about a minute one time. I used to work for a library doing genealogy research, so I figured I'd give it a shot while I had a few spare minutes :p
Hi Allie, that's fine! I love the comments, because it makes me feel that someone, somewhere, is actually reading this stuff... but of course it's not compulsory....
ReplyDeleteBeing able to find things on the internet is a real skill, not everyone can do it. Took me ages to get the hang of it, but I'm slowly improving.
Coug
Allie at least you put your research skills to use, doing proper work. I managed the extraordinary feat of getting hired, then un-hired twice this summer, as a research assistant--both positions turned out to be under a work-study programme, so they expected me to be enrolled in classes at the same time. Er, I'm trying to make money to PAY for school.
ReplyDeleteBeing resourceful isn't creepy, so tell your husband, and brother, that I politely disagree with them. You know what IS creepy? Spending twenty fruitless minutes looking for an Andy Schleck ketchup advertisement :P
Susanne, that anecdote about the team leaving Riis' party, to join Kim Andersen, makes me sad. That must surely have hurt.
Talking of being hurt.... I have just checked my stats (mild obsession) and over the last 10 hours, 31% of visitors who came via Google used the search term "Andy Schleck girlfriend 2011" and the most recent one was from "Department Of Homeland Security".
ReplyDeleteAllie, is that you, or should I be worried??
Coug
(PS only joking, I know that you are in Penn, and they are in Arlington!)
Yes, made me very, very sad too. I'm glad Andy at least had the decency to thank him.
ReplyDeleteIt also makes me wonder why the WHOLE team would leave. I read it several times to make sure and it does say EVERYONE - why would Chris Anker and Nicki Sørensen leave with them? (OK, slightly irrelevant for the story but still :P)
A) Andy is so charismatic that everyone just follows him.
ReplyDeleteB) There was a misunderstanding, and they thought that Bjarne was coming along as well.
Coug
PS, nothing wrong with irrelevant diversions, I do it all the time!
"They thought Bjarne was coming along as well." Ha, ha, ha, somehow I don't think that was the case! But it would explain why everyone just left without saying goodbye...
ReplyDeleteOption C. Bjarne was with Contador that night.
ReplyDeleteOooh, good one Barbara!
ReplyDeleteOption D: Bjarne had been eating garlic and had REALLY BAD BREATH but no-one had the nerve to tell him.
OK now I'm just being silly.
It's quite likely that they were so used to being moved around as a unit that when one went, they all went. They probably thought that it was all part of the evening's arrangements.
That's what I think, anyway. Tell you what, some of you should pop over to Lisieux later on today and ask them, how's that?
Coug
Allie- you have to much time on your hands! I love it as it saves me having to go to the trouble of doing it. I have to admit searching for 'Jil' but then I thought what if her name is not actually Jil? Mind you, deleting the facebook link may suggest it is her.
ReplyDeleteThe twitter pic I'm not sure. When I look at the pics of her with OGL she has quite a large face with a square jaw, or Frankie and wife and OGL have pin heads.
I must say when I saw the pics with OGL I was pleasantly suprised. I mean she is without a doubt very pretty with lovely eyes but she doesn't strike me as the typical 'model type'. Certainly not a topless model (cav) or a luscious lingerie gal (Jakob). Some pics she looked very young or thats probably because I'm on a different side of 30! I think they look really cute together.
However (this is my catty comment), I couldn't help noticing on the side view pic of her and OGL, that if they were to marry and live happily ever after that their kiddies would have a very large chance of having a 'big nosey'.
Cindy
OGL's "attitude"...I think it's important to remember that guys doing this kind of "job" at this level - are not normal people. They are focused, driven and demanding - otherwise - they wouldn't be where they are. I had the same reactions to OGL's "terseness" regarding the world that revolves around him and the people (women) in that world. I actually have had some "ouch" feelings watching him around his mother (who must be an amazing woman). In the video where the boys are at their lake - there is some more "machismo" regarding being vegetarian and a Luxembourger who was veggi and then had a sex change operation - (so they didn't want to even entertain that idea!)their "attitudes" were....I'll just say "from the 50's"..... Maybe Dave Zabrisky should have a chat with them?
ReplyDeleteI've worked for a number of "famous people" and they ALL have the similar component of feeling really good about demanding that all their needs be met. It is, afterall, how they got there. Still, always gives me a little hiccup when I see them doing it. Again - they aren't "normal".
BolderEl
Yes, I've often laughed at Andy's unconcious assumption that everything will be done for him: and of course, it pretty much has. Any bloke still living at home with him mum at the age of 25 is what you might call a little "sheltered" from the world.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone remembers the Schleckland post about "So you think you'd like to date a Schleck" you'll remember that it was very much revolving around his life, career and commitments, with personal stuff squeezed into the odd free moments, and even those were likely to be interrupted by the WADA stormtroopers asking for samples.
I think he's done a huge amount of growing up this year: in fact, I date it back to the Vuelta and the shock of actually being thrown off the race. That was a reality check if ever there was one: that the man who had been doting over him for -how long did he ride for Bjarne? 5 years? - that many years, could suddenly treat him like a junior member and just sack him on the spot.
I watched the ToCalifornia presentation the other day - I know, I'm so behind - and Andy had to speak about WW's death. He said he'd never had to deal with this situation before. (I had a slight moment of "my god! 25 years old and no-one close to you has ever died? A sheltered life, indeed!") More growing-up.
Not to mention the HUGE responsibility of the whole LT deal. (*ponderous voice*) A Team Built Around Andy Schleck..... no, no pressure, then.
Still, the Tour is going well so far, three Leopards in the top 10 and no big problems or injuries.
And it's Friday! That means it's nearly the weekend and lots of pedalling to watch, yay!
Coug
I haven't commented on one of your posts before but I absolutely love your blog! I always have to laugh :P You have a funny way of discussing serious subjects. Keep it up! :D
ReplyDeleteHey Marleen, thank you very much! I'm a bit over-stretched at the moment, as I have a botany exam next week, so I'm relying on Miss Fede to keep us all up to date with what's happening. But I'll try to give you my particular interpretation of events when I can...
