The Alex Dowsett Incident

"What?" I hear you say, "Who's Alex Dowsett?"

Kara knows, don't you, Kara?

Alex Dowsett is a Sky rider:he joined Sky this season, having previously been in the Trek-Livestrong Under 23 squad.

He's pretty damned good at TT, and as you can see, has a nice smile, pleasantly tousled hair - probably has tuftage potential - and, what you can't see, he has a very laid-back, flat, deadpan, Essex accent.

He was recently a studio guest at the Vuelta coverage, on the day when his team-mates Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome - or "Friggins" as they are now known - were battling up that horrendously steep hill on Stage 17, ending in Chris Froome beating Cobo by just one second.

I was shouting "Go! Go!" at the computer, the commentators were screaming deliriously,  there was madness and pandemonium all around, then Ned Boulting turned to Alex, in the studio, and said something like "Wow! Fantastic! That's amazing!" to which Alex replied, deadpan, "Yeah. He done reely well."

A master of the understatement, our Alex.

So, this Incident? Tour of Britain, Sunday, London: in the morning he did a storming TT and won it ("Yay!") and in the afternoon he was participating in the "road race" or Criterium, as it was really, being 8 loops of a circuit up and down the Embankment.

During one of the laps, a bright green Sky bidon came flying out of the peloton as it crossed opposite us.

Now, going back to the tour of Colorado, they had some fairly amusing on-screen graphics, like pointers labelling the riders, which moved with them. I suspect we are going to see a lot more of those.. but the point is, LLB and I thought it would be fun if they also added a graphic (this is under the heading of How To Make Road Racing More Interesting To Watch, by the way) of a cartoon explosion, to go wherever a flung bidon lands. So, now, we always make a sound effect when a bidon is thrown - I can't find a way to write it down, but it's like an airy whistle, descending in tone - the sound of a missile coming down to earth, with "Pwhhh!" at the end for when it hits the ground.

Ah, little things make us laugh.

Anyway, we saw this bidon go flying into the crowd on the other side of the road, and we both made the missile noise, but to our amazement it hit an elderly gent right on the forehead, Splat! Water everywhere, the bidon bounced back into the road, the elderly gent staggered backwards with one hand held to his head, people nearby turned to him in consternation, and one of the team cars ran over the bidon which exploded with a mighty POP! leaving bits of plastic shrapnel all over the road.

The elderly gent wasn't hurt, he was more shocked and surprised, and he quickly recovered himself and continued to watch the race. Although he moved back next time they came through...

Later that evening, Alex Dowsett - obviously wracked with guilt tweeted:

So I responded:

And he answered me!

Alex, you have made yourself a fan!

  1. Alex did great at the TT! :) Glad to hear that the guy that got hit by the bottle was okay. It really is a story to tell when the man got home xD
Love your blog btw! I always read it but I (almost) never leave comments (don't know why :P)

  2. I thought the Alex incident was going to be about you 'starring' in one of his interview videos?

  3. AND he retweeted your response so everybody got to see it!

I enjoyed him from his amusing Twitter presence in this last year - great back and forth with Taylor Phinney, for example. But when I heard him speak, he endeared himself even more to me.

How fun that you got to see this weird little moment (only fun, of course, because Elderly Fella was OK).

  6. Oh yes, Alex is "my boy" now! I hadn't realised that he'd retweeted my reassurance - *blushes* - d'aaw, I'm all embarassed!

I just love his deadpan, flat Essex accent. He was great in the studio, commentating, and really brought something to the show. More Alex, please!

Such a shame that it didn't happen during one of the circuits that we were filming... LLB and I have agreed that next time - oh yes, we're going to more races! - we'll take it in turns to "video without watching the camera" in case of incidents.

PS Much laughing in Schleckland about Mr Becca's home and office (which is in the same building as the Leopard office) being raided by the tax-evasion police. Ha! Ha! Ha!

  7. Becca's "situation" all becomes much clearer now eh? Sounds like Fabu and Jakob are both on the fence about staying. Fabu apparently apologized to Bjarne about the departure. Interesting since it apparently cost Fabu 3 mil euros - but Bjarne says it's forgiven - yah, I bet!
Should be some interesting times what with this as well as Conti and LA issues (and Johann in those as well).
Sounds like all is very shakey in Schleckland...

  8. Hey Boulderado, yes, I'm laughing all the way at poor Mr Becca and his troubles.

I imagine that Bjarne is laughing, as well: but I expect that he is man enough - and manager enough - to take back any Leopards who wish to return to him.

Conti's case is going to be a walkover: the UCI have now agreed that there is going to be a minimum level of clenbuterol instead of a flat zero, and they can hardly "do" someone as high profile as Conti for something that is going to be acceptable a very short time after his trial. He will be let off. I personally think that the UCI are stalling in order to work out a way to let him off and bring in the minimum tolerance without losing too much face.

Schleckland, thank you for your concern, is fabulously firm: luckily it is a seperate entity from Leopard! It consists mostly of Andy, me, you lot, and Frankie. Er, not necessarily in that order. (whoops, back to Andyhab I go, hi ho)

It is a source of minor grief that we haven't heard a squeak from OGL recently, so there hasn't been much to say about him. Nor any nice new photos to asmire. It seems very mean to speculate about what he is doing and how he is feeling, without some sort of supporting information.

(Message to Andy: Don't fret, pet, we still think you're adorable.)

Obviously he's been having a lot of tooth trouble, he's been accused of using it as an excuse to avoid Canada and the Worlds - which he vehemently denied on Twitter, if only briefly - he's had an extraction, an infection, and antibiotics: and he must be feeling a complete fool over the Becca business, whether he knew about it (in which case, Big Guilt) or didn't (in which case, Big Embarassment).

It now looks as though he might lose Jakob, and Fabu: he's already lost Stuey: this is an awful lot for a man to bear when a lot of it will be seen as "his" fault, in the sense that he chose to leap to Leopard, and encouraged his buddies to come with him. Sigh. And now they are going to be under the heel of Mr Bryneel, with all the problems that entails, which can't be a cheerful prospect. The forums are already full of snide predictions about his TT speeds increasing due to "special wind tunnel" training, ie drugs. Sigh.

    But Schleckland continues! Yay!

  9. Yes, got it - I should have said Leopardville is shakey...not Schleckland.

My heart goes out to all these guys - I never really did like the "feel" of Becca - but decided to give him a pass since he was supporting my favorite team - but now, it seems like the Sugar Daddy is really of questionable character.
A friend of mine suggested that Becca was "more than a friend" in terms of Andy - and now that Andy is openly having female relationships - that's miffed Becca and hence the pull out....
    I just don't think so.
My thoughts are that Becca wanted to be the star of a big, big superstar show and it just didn't pan out - so he's quit it, like the bossy, spoiled rich kid that he is.
I keep wondering if Mercedes is somehow behind the "raid" on Becca's business. They seemed fairly pissed off with the merger and being kept out of that loop.
And now they've got the "naming" issue - sheesh, management at it's worst with this whole gig.

  10. OGL has been intimate with a lot of girls for quite a few years.

Things will work out somehow before the start of the new season and I don't think JB is a worse person than BR. They both were involved with "things", just like KA. I just want to believe that a lot has changed for the better.

    Barbara.
