The UCI are calling the team RadioShack-Nissan, so alas, no more RaNT acronym, looks like we're stuck with RSN which doesn't really convert easily into an
But I'm telling you all now, I am NOT going to be shouting "Up the R's ! " I won't! I won't!
The full list of teams will be released on the 12th, which is next Monday: and already there are subtle attempts to lure Leopard fans to other teams - thanks to @DivingCaroline for bringing this to my attention:
Clever, huh?
Their blurb describes it as being "white, black and Blizzard Blue".
Good to know that shade of blue has a name.
They also waffle on about how this will make them stand out in the peloton: hmm, they are betting that Leopard are going to be shoved into red-and-black Shack kit, aren't they?
They're also copying the idea of having the riders' names on the back.
Now I am a big fan of this idea, but I prefer the way Sky have done it, with the rider's name along the side panel, so that it is clearly legible when they are in the cycling position. Great for camerabike shots.
Still no news on the new Shack kit: but Mr Bruyneel has issued the team roster, so at least those questions have been answered. Now we just have to learn the faces of all the Shack riders! Well, all but one: there's no point trying to learn the face of poor Markel Iriza, as he did a major face-splat in training and wasn't able to go to the first meet-the-team outing in Calpe (to which I was not invited, surprisingly) due to a broken jaw, broken finger, and multiple stitches in his eyebrow and lip. Ouch!
I'm not quite prepared to publish the photo of him, all stitched and bruised, but if you follow this link, you can check it out for yourself.
Other news today? Andy says he might do the Giro after all. This could be a good thing, especially if Contador doesn't do it, and if Andy can therefore concentrate on winning the race, instead of beating Contador...
I don't mind what he does, as long as he gets lots of coverage: so, Attack, Andy, Attack! There, that's my tactical advice for the year.
More Other News: Jakob has been told to lose weight! Oh no, those dimples are at risk.... Kim Andersen says that he needs to shift a few kilos in order to get up the mountains better, and is dangling a carrot in front of him in the form of leadership of the Giro team, if he loses the weight. Otherwise he'll be sent to the Tour as a super-domestique again. So brace yourself, Leelu and Nim, for a skinny Jakob.
Here he is at the Calpe meet'n'greet session, sucking in his cheeks to try to look thinner.
I'm curious to see what ends up happening with the team name because all of the posts that I saw today on Twitter and the LT website were still using all three names. My perception is that the only time "Radioshack Nissan" is being used is in conjuction with the UCI license. - Kat
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe it when I saw the Cyclingnews headline 'Fuglsang too fat to win the Giro'! Can we say eating disorder? I hope he doesn't get too thin, ala Schlecks. I sometimes despair at how thin those boys are so I can't imagine Jakob being just as skinny.
ReplyDeleteOn the upside, at least both RaNT (okay, okay, RSN... *sigh* just doesn't have the same ring to it) and, more excitingly (for me), GreenEdge have their UCI licences! Can't wait for the new cycling year, esp. to see the GE kit at TDU.

ReplyDeleteI am loving these pictures that Leopard Trek (no change there yet!) is posting on Twitter of the guys training camp. Interesting pic's *some of them* - one in particular caught my attention. Andy, Johan and Kloden. The expressions are what I find most interesting. Would love to have been a fly on the wheel during that conversation!

Save that pic! I suspect it is a "moment in history".

Hi Gang,
ReplyDeleteYes, it's interesting to see the strange mixture of Leopard and Shack bikes/kit/riders/staff. I always find it odd that they aren't allowed to change into the new kit until the new season starts, so you get all these training camps which appear to have spies and infiltrators...
The team name is an interesting one: as Kat says, the UCI are calling them RadioShack-Nissan, but on the Leopard site they are using all three names. AND, best of all, they are still using the O logo! Let's hope it appears on the new kit as well.
It's also good to see that Leopard are keeping the name alive, as their development squad are being called Leopard Trek, and they seem to be firmly based in Lux. In case you hadn't heard about it, it's on the Leopard site:
http://www.leopardtrek.lu/news/leopard-trek-continental-team-sets-2012
Five out of eleven rider are from Lux, which is pretty impressive! Who knows, they may even keep the "old" kit, which would be nice.
And as for Jakob being "too fat", well, we discussed that pretty thoroughly on Twitter and we all agree that he's not exactly fat to start with. I do think there might have been a bit of an error in the translation somewhere, but then again, a lot of riders do go this route. Fabian did: he lost a lot of weight, but in his case he found it didn't improve his climbing, but it did ruin his classics riding, so he went back to being strength-and-power. It will be interesting to see if Jakob a) does lose some weight, and b) improves from it.
Personally, I thought his problems with climbing were more to do with back and hip pain, rather than being too heavy, but we have to assume that his DS knows best?

..and in these days of ever-present cameras, long lenses, small cameraphones etc, it must be a constant strain not to show anger/frustration/impatience etc, just in case a "candid" shot appears and spoils your PR.
I haven't seen this report confirmed by other sources but if it is true, the UCI has come down on RaNT for their three sponsor name with a huge fine. - Kat

ReplyDeleteSorry the link is not better...Andy & Frank in interview.
Gut hit...OMG - Andy is a "man" now. His personna has matured so much. I feel like an old Auntie who has watched this boy grow up and just realized he's really a man now.
He's looking a bit more like Steve.

Johan has a cleft chin also....hummmm...perhaps this could work!

Hey Kat, thanks for that link - just about 100% spoof, I reckon! Cyclismas are often good for a giggle. I love the bit about a swearing Irishman breaking glasses in the background...
ReplyDeleteAnd Elle, thanks for that link also; how very serious they both are! No more larking about, it's all serious stuff now. It's good to see that they are taking is all seriously, I wouldn't expect anything else: but I hope they find time to have some fun with the guys as well.
I find it slightly worrying the way the reporter commented that Mr Bryneel was there with them at the interviews, "sometimes interjecting to expand on their answers". This could be seen as slightly heavy-handed, don't you think? As though he wants to restrict what they say by his presence, and to ensure that everything he wants said, is clearly said. I wonder if this time next year we will be discussing if the price for winning the Tour was too high...
Well, folks, it looks like being an interesting year doesn't it?

I was also giggling away at the "swearing Irishman breaking glasses ...". :) - Kat
ReplyDeleteBjarne did that as well. I don't think it's a biggie - but it does clarify for me what I was seeing in Andy and Frank. Knowing they knew they weren't "free wheeling" - changes the energy.
ReplyDeleteI just chastised Tour of California for a jersey submission - it's light blue, black and white. I asked if everyone was just using the Leopard Trek colors now? Sheesh. There is a rainbow out there....put in some effort!

Very cool! They will end the 6th of 7 stages in Boulder *sqweeling with joy!!* before the time trial on the last day in Denver.

"Sheesh. There is a rainbow out there....put in some effort!" - LOLOLOL!! Totally agree!!
ReplyDeleteOn the OPQS jersey - I do like the colours, but it does look like the love-child of Saxo Bank and LT.
On Jakob's fat - utterly ridiculous! There is NOTHING of the boy! Andersen is a d*** and should realise that riders come in all shapes and sizes and not everyone fits the mold of a Schleck. And yes, Coug, Jakob's difficulties were more to do with the sheer pain in his back and the fact that he couldn't feel one of his legs, rather than carrying too much weight up the mountains in this year's Tour.
Andy doing the Giro in 2012 - God, I hope not! You should all know why I am of this opinion by now.
Apparently the team name will be Radioshack Nissan. And it appears the development squad will now be known as Bontreger-Livestrong. Goodbye LT I guess...
Interesting year ahead indeed!
Leelu
PS sorry, I seem to sound cranky in this comment, but I don't mean to... more just cynical.
Awww, nooooo! Leelu, that's really bad news - no, not that you are a bit cranky (*gives Leelu virtual hug, there, there, all better*), but that the development team are losing the Leopard name. Boo!
ReplyDeleteI am still clinging to the hope that they will retain the O logo.
Otherwise my flags are going to be recycled as dishrags! They are currently decorating my hallway, and I have to say they look quite nice there. I've decided to let them stay until we have seen the new kit.
I'm slightly worried today by the headline news that there has been grenade-throwing and people killed at Liege in Belgium. Liege? "The" Liege?
What is the world coming to.
